Pass of the National Guard to the Sedena is official: AMLO publishes decree in the DOF

The decree by which the registration of the civil security force to the military is made official will enter into force on Saturday.

The incorporation of the National Guard to the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) became official this Friday after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador published the corresponding decree in the Official Gazette of the Federation.

The document now establishes that it is up to Sedena to exercise operational and administrative control of the National Guard, by the National Strategy for Public Security defined by the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection.

The reform approved by Congress also indicates that the National Guard, a security body created just in 2019, will carry out its operations with a structure that will be integrated by the Ministry of National Defense at the highest level of command.

Luis Cresencio Sandoval, head of Sedena, will have among his powers to formulate the policies, programs, and actions of the National Strategy for Public Security that applies to the National Guard.

What other tasks will the head of Sedena have?
According to the decree, Sandoval will be in charge of the following activities of the National Guard:

  • Appoint the persons in charge of the territorial and state coordination and of the special units.
  • Issue organization, procedure, and public service manuals.
  • Prepare operational programs and strategies.
  • Organize the territorial distribution of the Guard.
  • Propose adjustments to the organizational structure.
Earlier, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador thanked the legislators for having approved his initiative to reform the Organic Law of the Federal Public Administration, the National Guard Law,  the Mexican Army Law, and the Army Promotion Law.

"Thank you very much to the senators for approving this Law. That is the most important thing, that the law was approved so that the National Guard is operated, has the guidance and example of Sedena," said López Obrador from Zacatecas.
